Wendi SELF PORTRAIT

  1. Pose is really beautiful - must have been hard to hold! While everything else has great depth, the face is kind of hard to read & lacks the same depth as the rest of the piece.

  2. Wendy – Beautiful pose and foreshortening of core of body. The shadowing on the left is really successful in making the composition balanced.

  3. Interesting position for a self-portrait. Very unique. The rendering of the figure from the neck down looks great and proportional with great structural integrity. The face looks off maybe because of the eyes and position of the eyelids.

  4. Blocked in tone areas gives it a smooth flow even though it looks posterized and rasterized, as if through photoshop. You could still go over selective areas with your water soluble marker and add depth using sharp line/shading. Very clear narrative. Perspective wise, drop down the horizon line in the background to make the viewer feel more at eye level.

  5. Very successful shadows and highlights
    Looks like you
Great foreshortening-body appears to be receding in space
R arm could use some shaping
Background and other elements make for a nice composition

  6. A special jury prize for the most masochistic pose of all. It is quite nice to have placed yourself into a naturalistic, snapshot sort of situation. And all things considered, the articulation of the figure--especially in the hands and feet--is exceptional.

  7. The dark shadows are really beautifully done. And it's very very readable as a figure even which could have been complicated by the dificulties of the pose, and the detail involved in the many shadows and the fabric of the clothing. Really nicely rendered lines too.

  8. The composition is nice. The foreshortening is done very well. I would have liked to see more darks.

  9. Commendable for your choice of pose that you decided to portray yourself in. I particularly enjoy the 'illustrative' quality your work has. The planes of the figure are easily read with the marks made following the form of those surfaces. I think a few foreshortening studies of your own arms would help in the next time you choose to draw something with such dynamic recession of the body. Great job :3

  10. The shadow blocking is done very successfully in this piece, and I agree with the rest in saying that the foreshortening is done well, but the head looks slightly off from the rest of the body. You are holding a very difficult pose which is rendered well but I think the face would have connected with the body more so if you had drawn it looking at the audience.

  11. You have beautifully rendered legs and feet they seem very real. The face and arm are a bit distorted but overall it's lovely. I think you have a great pose choice it made for a great composition. This was one of my favorite pieces, good job!

  12. Wendy’s body has good form and proportions. The pose she chose to draw was challenging and she did a good job with it. She might have pushed the darks more to make the portrait stand out. Something with her head appeared off to me.

  13. Legs, hands, and feet - all awesome. Excellent foreshortening on the legs. The foreshortening of the arms needs a little work, but you already know that. You nailed the legs, so you can totally get the arms down too.

  14. Ambitious work. Maybe a bit more of a tonal range and shadow blocking to indicate more depth. Nice work.
