Students learn basic anatomy and will begin to develop an understanding of the way a figure inhabits space; thus able to successfully reproduce this space in two dimensions. The goal of the course is to learn academic, realistic representation of the figure: Emphasis will be on accurately rendering the figure on the page in proper proportion. Students work up to developing a personal style within the confines of academic figurative art.
I'm jealous of the details you are able to capture in your pieces; this one is a little looser, maybe, but beautiful. I feel like it needs some garland or something at the bottom to weight it.
How come you took off your glasses? Nice how you rendered the reflection in dark hair. Id say you have the technique down pretty solid, focus on bringing in concept/content in your background.
beautiful rendering, nice use of lights darks and midtones. Can see your idea of pieces radiating from the figure, reads like shards to me which I think is what you intended. Would have been more effective if you could have brought some of these shards out to the edge of the paper.
Nearly photo real, but I think you made your chin larger than it is Great tonal variations Marks branching off of figure make it appear as if it's coming apart Hair could be a tad darker
The building of the low tones is enviable. An argument could be made that this range is far enough for this particular piece, but a few black lines would be beautiful here.
Your mark making is incredible! The one drawback from using only graphite is the contrasts of that black from charcoal, I would love to see little hints of that black just to make the piece pop!
You have a very nice soft quality to your work. This piece has lovely use of mark making, i wish however that you would have pushed the shadows a bit more around the right side of the face to create depth. Otherwise good job, this is a very successful piece.
His portrait is very well done and certainly looks like him. I wish he would have included his glasses on his face because this is an addition that makes the portrait more true to life. I would like to see more darks in his work. Mike’s line work is very strong.
Excellent proportions and likeness. The extraneous marks around the head don't quite read clearly enough to make sense yet. You're an awesome artist, Mike. I've admired your work and tried to learn from you.
Nice portrait. Maybe it could use a bit more tonality in the background to help communicate your idea of disbursement. Nice shading and tonal balance of the portrait. It is recognizable and realistic in nature.

ReplyDeleteNice stylized mark-making around the face. The face is beautifully rendered, you have a very skilled hand with graphite.

ReplyDeleteNice rendering. This piece is really strong but I would like to see more of the shoulders and torso.

ReplyDeleteYour mark making is very nice. I would like to see more highlights. You can definitely tell that it is you, but the chin seems a little large.
