Students learn basic anatomy and will begin to develop an understanding of the way a figure inhabits space; thus able to successfully reproduce this space in two dimensions. The goal of the course is to learn academic, realistic representation of the figure: Emphasis will be on accurately rendering the figure on the page in proper proportion. Students work up to developing a personal style within the confines of academic figurative art.
The shading above the body lends a lot to the piece, but should be continued in other areas. Shadows on face are really interesting - were those really the only ones present?
Stephanie – It’s awesome that you drew your whole body and not just your portrait. The pose and the glasses really captures your personality. The proportions were also well done.
Very challenging taking this perspective, looking over the shoulder. Foot looks flat due to that heavy outline, but you could fix that just by shading the whole upper background. Its nice, I think it would feel more comfortable if the whole wall/floor were darkened to a near-black tone; it would be a more deliberate play with negspace given the limbs' contact with the border.
Stephanie- yours had some real personality, very nice. Good job on the proportions as well. Because the shadow behind you is not consistent it is a little distracting. Shadows on face and carpet are very effective and beautifully done.
A daring pose--all the more commendable for its near-impossibility to capture oneself. Though understandably limited in detail, it fully defines its character (thanks largely to certain shorthand elements as the glasses--lens distortion and all).
I commend you, as with the rest in class that have decided to do a nude portrait. Good proportions throughout and the capturing of your own likeness seems to be a success. Interesting cropping choices-- I will say that if you choose to crop out a part of your foot or arm, you should either crop it all the way to the joint or don't crop it at all (though that may just be my personal taste). Awesome job nonetheless!
I enjoy the composition, it was nice to see the whole body and not just a face. I would have liked to see you complete the shadow around your body, a few more mid tones like the ones on the legs would have been nice in other parts of the body as well but overall very nice. I think you really captures your personality.
Stephanie did include her glasses in her self-portrait and I think this makes her work more interesting. She is recognizable and the glasses complete her character. Her proportions were off somewhat and the shadowing could be stronger. She has unique features in her face and I think she could have played off these to make her portrait have more personality.

ReplyDeleteI like the weird cropping. Probably could use more mid tones because it looks a little flat. Otherwise it looks really good and a lot like you.

ReplyDeleteNicely placed on page-could crop bottom an inch
ReplyDeleteGreat proportions
Nice tonal variations
Back wall could use some shading (behind arms and legs)

ReplyDeleteReally looks like you. I would like to see more dark shadows and mid-tones. The composition is very nice.

ReplyDeleteNice proportions. The hair could use some texture, that's the only thing. Face looks just like you. Gutsy.
ReplyDeleteNice pose. Proportions are nice but seem shortened. Perhaps a bit more shading around entire body for depth. Simple yet effective. :)
