Students learn basic anatomy and will begin to develop an understanding of the way a figure inhabits space; thus able to successfully reproduce this space in two dimensions. The goal of the course is to learn academic, realistic representation of the figure: Emphasis will be on accurately rendering the figure on the page in proper proportion. Students work up to developing a personal style within the confines of academic figurative art.
Is the attempt for your portrait to "fade into the background" a statement about yourself? Darker shadows in the face/hair could balance out the dark stool. The orange and blue make a beautiful contrast.
You have very stylized proportions, love the use of complimentary colors of orange and blue, lovely job on the fabric, it looks like silk. You worked the chalk pastels beautifully.
Torso short, but go one step further and find out why. Does the foot really reach as long as the forearm in this particular perspective. Id suggest you go back to that pose and take a picture, because when I look at self pic shots in mirrors, taken at eye level, I notice the legs are very shortened compared to the rest of the body. Then compare what you see to the photograph, as a tool to help you understand how the torso got short in the first place.
good use of complimentary colors contrast of blue and orange on a diagonal, but wish you could have brought some of the blue into the orange and vise versa. Could use some darks, or remove the dark of the stool?
Nice complementary colors and interesting composition. I love the rendering style of the figure. I do think the figure could use more darker and definitive colors or marks. The chair and fabric are bold and competing for attention in the piece.
Colors work nicely together and are very solid Hair could be a tad darker Great shadow blocks on arms and legs Hands and feet, are nicely shaped Beautiful composition
Whether intentional or not--a nice stylization of the figure and drapery. The blending is well done, particularly noticeable in the very effective large negative area.
Nice use of blue and orange as complimentary colors. The composition seems to be heavy on the left side but I'm not sure if that was intentional-- it still works however in that the focus of the image isn't dead-center. I think the image would work better without the chair of the leg showing as it creates this harsh dark spot that draws my eye to that spot more than the rest of the image. Overall an interesting piece :D
Your fabrics are fantastic and you have a nice use of complimentary colors, a few more highlights and shadows would be affective to create curvature in the body and offset the dark chair. The proportions are a little off but overall you have a very captivating piece.
I really like the color choice you used on this piece they stand out against each with being complimentary to each other. You mentioned you loved to draw fabric and you incorporated it into your piece, but I wonder why it wasn't draped around the body as well? You would have gotten some interesting lines had it been laying on certain areas of the body and maybe would have shown even more of your personality in the piece.
i really like the risk involved in using one complimentary color with another and admire that in this piece. The figure sits really well; I would prefer to see more marks, more gestural lines included as well.
The crease in the middle of the paper was very distracting and took away from the detail in her art. Her look is very clean, crisp and soft. It has a warm feeling that was given off by the orange that she used in the portrait. Her proportions are somewhat off but this also makes me think this was done on purpose and defines her own style. The hair has nice highlights and shadows in it. The sheet placed on the chair is unnecessary in my opinion.
The two hues work nicely together. A sense of playfulness. The orange used in the background and in the image seem to give the eye very little time to rest. Perhaps more tonal progression just to add more depth. Also, maybe extending the blue fabric across the bottom would balance the comp a bit more. Overall sense of playfulness.

ReplyDeleteThe torso should be a little longer. I really like how the legs look. The face should be thinner on the bottom of the left side.

ReplyDeleteI like the orange color and the empty space. I love asymmetrical compositions with empty space to one side.
