Sara SELF PORTRAIT

  1. Uncompleted background gives an unfinished feel. You mentioned fustration - I think that shows, but could be a little more stylized in the way you express it. Marks are really beautiful; lack of darks in the face cause some of the details to be lost at a distance.

  2. Sara – I liked that your piece wasn’t photorealistic, but more stylized. Good mark making/ brush strokes. Your use of a muted pallet created a soft quality to the figure against the contrasting background. Very well done!

  3. Painting oil on canvas. Designed to capture an emotive essence of the moment. Stylistically consistent across the canvas. Further address exact angle/depth of the lips. Tonallistically believable, there is a disruptive background that leads the eye in an S curve distracting from, yet in line with that the figure's motion (eye-shoulder-shoulder). Skin color is yellow, if it was a little more red/orange/pink you’d pull against the background blues and pop a little more.

  4. Lovely composition. I love the brushstrokes and simple use of colors. Try pushing the darks within the figure’s face and shadows a little more to create more depth and unity between the background and figure.

  5. I like that you intentionally left some unfinished, this was an effective statement, but wish you could have taken that unfinished quality into the figure. Good proportions.

  6. Great use of highlights and shadow
Background works well with figure (blue behind highlighted side, white behind side in shadow)
I like how the background becomes the foreground (shirt) It's as if figure is being swallowed
    Hair color looks perfect
Skin color could use a tad more orange

  7. As in many of the pieces, here also certain shorthand defining characteristics have been omitted: this makes for the recognition of the subject less obvious--though not necessarily for a less successful portrait.
Unfinished areas always being (personally) preferred, nevertheless, it seems the blank side here ought to be on the left and a bit less abrupt.

  8. I love the many shades of muted tones, and your choice to use this pallet on the face exclusively as well as how it contrasts to the dark color of the shirt. I think the background could use a brighter color to offset the muted tones and highlight them even more.

  9. Your picture is definitely representative of you. I really like the mark making and the choppy way you laid the paint. I would have liked to see the background finished because it appears unfinished to me.

  10. I appreciate your use of oil as the medium of choice and also the approach with the impasto-like quality. In terms of composition, I think the image would have benefit more if the 'unfinished' style would have been dispersed throughout the image rather than having one half fully painted and the other half empty. Not sure if that made sense, but hopefully you are able to discern what I meant :D Great nonetheless!

  11. I really enjoy the mark making in this piece, it shows the emotion you had mentioned while painting this. The background color that flows into the shirt makes the piece look like a floating bust. I think it would help to add highlights along that arm to make it more defined and part of the body rather than a head and shoulders peeking through a dark space. The detail in the skin and clavicles are rendered amazingly.

  12. Her portrait had good texture and detailed brush work in the neck and face of her body. I wish she would have continued these same style strokes in the hair. I am able to recognize her in the painting. It looks somewhat unfinished with the black wrap around her head. The painting did not fill the page. She might use the approach Michelle used to make the painting look more finished.

  13. I really like the background - blending the black clothing and dark blue ground. Awesome small brushstrokes, very strong mark-making. Maybe some shadowed areas in the hair could be darker to tie things in with the background. It's beautiful though.

  14. Percentage of dark on left side. Your portrait successfully captures a sense of emotion.
