Students learn basic anatomy and will begin to develop an understanding of the way a figure inhabits space; thus able to successfully reproduce this space in two dimensions. The goal of the course is to learn academic, realistic representation of the figure: Emphasis will be on accurately rendering the figure on the page in proper proportion. Students work up to developing a personal style within the confines of academic figurative art.
Of course the border is awesome and thoughtful and original. If anything it’s a key player and therefor needs to be darker or otherwise more prominent. From a distance it just looks grey. Tattoos are the focus of the work, they are the real story in this piece, and they could use just a touch more lights and darks to make them feel part of the curves of the skin. Unless there's an intentional purpose for the cropping selection, I'd suggest scootching the frame over just a titch, revealing the face if not the rest of Left Tattoo. Very nicely done though.
Beautiful rendering of figure. I love the design of your frame and the concept, but they are not quite tied together. I wish the frame was as defined as the figure, it just seems unfinished.
Immediately recognizable though figure is not facing the viewer Hair is beautifully rendered Beautiful detail in frame I like that it appears as a reflection in a mirror Tattoos are a tad dark
Another borderline impossible--and potentially telling--third-person pose. Successful range of grey tones (between the various papers and the actual media). ...Album cover material. But yes, to make this fully work there ought to be one more tone--either under or outside the borders of the pencil ornamentation--and the cut of the oval should be honed.
I love the rendering of darks and lights. The hair is great. I really like the composition but I wish you more moved over enough in the frame of the mirror to see your whole face.
This is perhaps one of the more interesting poses and you've made a clever use of the two mirror approach. The composition and decision of cropping makes for a curious reaction-- what are you staring at (if anything)? You've made great use of the conte and it is especially successful with the highlights you were able to pull out with the white crayon. The tattoos seem to follow the slight curve of the shoulder blades and really makes them convincing! Good job Dani!
I really like the layered effect with the frame on paper, it gives the piece an old worldly feel of a portrait with a contemporary twist of the nudity and tattoos. The highlights were done very well.
Great idea, I would have liked to see the side of your face a bit more but other than that its a very creative take on a self portrait. I also liked that this piece in a way highlights your tattoos which speaks about who you are and your personality which is very nice to see. Great job.
I wish there would have been color around the mirror, or in it. The mirror could have been cut out and then glue on the paper to give more of the layers she wanted. As it was, the mirror did not add the depth that was intended. The tattoos were very dark and unrealistic. I did enjoy the angle in the portrait; this made her work very unique. I could tell it was her, even looking at her back. Work in progress.
Interesting pose. Seems difficult to capture. Strong sense of photo-realism. Nice use of value on the subject. Perhaps more value rendering of the designs around the frame.
Beautifully rendered figure with the conte’ crayon. Loved the detailed mirror contour and the rendering of your tattoos. So lovely!
ReplyDeleteInteresting composition with the oval mirror and frame. Nice figure. The tattoos look too dark compared to the darks in your figure though.

ReplyDeleteGreat use of white. Very three-dimensional. Hair could benefit from some of the highlights also. Nice shading of the body.
