Students learn basic anatomy and will begin to develop an understanding of the way a figure inhabits space; thus able to successfully reproduce this space in two dimensions. The goal of the course is to learn academic, realistic representation of the figure: Emphasis will be on accurately rendering the figure on the page in proper proportion. Students work up to developing a personal style within the confines of academic figurative art.
Charcoal. Stark outlines on the arms take an otherwise three dimensional subject and roll him flatter toward the bottom of the page. The face is believable, well proportioned and tonally consistent given the lighting source.
I like the composition. It’s unusual and I enjoy the tension of balance in the piece in contrast with the soft mellow marks of the figure. Looks just like you. I would just suggest that you clean up the smudges and unwanted marks.
you rendered the face beautifully, it has a very human quality. I would have liked to see some more darks in the background and maybe a little more rendering in the chest.
Captures your personality Looks just like you, maybe a tad thin in the face Shadows and highlights on face are very successful I would like to see more tonal variation in the body
A nice modernist sort of portrait. A bit (intriguingly) weird--with just enough detail to define character and with a placement of eyes suggesting a third-person perspective.
Nice contrast with the values and the accuracy of capturing your likeness was successful. The mark-making to denote hair on the chest and jawline seems to be effective!
I like the composition of your piece but I feel that the shadows are not consistent in the rendering of them. Maybe if you had softened the shadows along the arm like you did the face it would connect more.
I like that your personality shows through your piece, your texture is nice and balanced. You could address the composition a little more when choosing placement on a page but overall its a very nice piece.
Aaron captured his image very well. His work was not flat and almost looked 3-dimensional with the expression on his face. The shading in his face works well to give it realism. This shading would have helped bring more life to the torso also. It is evident that he put effort into this work and I notice the progression and improvement in his art.
Cropping some of the negative space could be good, as well as adding some darks in the chest area to balance w/ face.
ReplyDeleteVery good contrast in the face, could use more darks on the body. You really captured your personality with the eyes. Very nicely rendered

ReplyDeleteThe face looks really good. I would like t see more darks and lights but I can still see the depth of the body with the mid-tones.
