Students learn basic anatomy and will begin to develop an understanding of the way a figure inhabits space; thus able to successfully reproduce this space in two dimensions. The goal of the course is to learn academic, realistic representation of the figure: Emphasis will be on accurately rendering the figure on the page in proper proportion. Students work up to developing a personal style within the confines of academic figurative art.
I really love the furniture in your composition; the composition as a whole is very nice. I really like the background and think it compliments the piece. It looks awesome, great depth. On proportions, the head seems a little small and the calves a little large. Overall, I like your color choices and find it very appealing.
The detail, color, tonality, and technique is extremely consistent throughout this piece
The neon colors in the figure make her the main focal point- however the other elements in the composition are just as beautifully rendered and nothing is lost
Highlights and shadows, particularly in the lower left hand corner, make it easy to tell where the light is coming from
Your painting technique is similar to that of your drawings
I love your use of bright color in the body, the cadmiums and yellows brighten your highlights. I love the loose brushstrokes, and you still manage to give the body some good weightiness. Thick brush strokes add alot of character and all of the colors blend nicely from a distance (as seen in this photograph). proportions are great and overall beautiful rendering of figure and background.
This is perhaps my favorite painting out of the whole class, although everyone did a great job in the end! I’m particularly drawn to your brushwork and that ‘chunky’ quality you have with handling the paint. The brushwork is simple but renders forms easily with just patches of color. I’m not a huge fan of blending which is why I really admire your piece a lot. The only things I would change is to get rid of the hard edge your shadow creates on the back wall—if I remember correctly, the lighting situation in that room created a much softer shadow? Overall this is an awesome piece :D Great job man!
Just an absolutely great piece. Unbelievable couch and model as far proportions, shading, and coloring. Just use some more midtones in the brighter areas of the painting and that should solve your issues. Amazing work Joel!
Yep, I love this piece, because I love the furniture and the right side of the couch, beautiful uses of light blues and the yellow couch. The figure itself is just smashing, especially the exact placement of the dark shadows on her thighs and legs. The change in the grey tone behind the couch makes that shadow on the wall look real also. Very well done!!
This is such a successful piece Joel! The figure looks proportionate (the head may be a bit small) and the colors are amazing in the skin! The couch and cushions also have a very painterly quality, yet they still look very realistic! Great job!
Really nice work. Love the lighting on the couch and cushions and blanket, very believable and readable. The figure could use attention to the appendages, because her hand feels a little thick due to that heavy outline. The shadow of the couch is a little dark, and instead reads as a cracked wall. Immediate reaction is a poverty/desperation/hopelessness scene. I think to help the shadow be more successful incorporate elements that pervade across the boundary of the shadow, liek the vertical lines of the boards which make up that wall.
I really enjoy your color choice and ho you rendered the figure the only thing I question is the use of contour lines around the figure, maybe if the were softened around the figure except for the really dark areas.
your mark making is beautiful. This is one of my favorite pieces because of the color pallet and the contrast between the figure and the background.this is a very beautiful piece! Good job.
Excellent use of varied black lines in figure. Background could use some flattening of it's depth. You painted a really beautiful couch, very professional looking. My favorite couch here.

ReplyDeleteGreat impact. A damned nice painting. The last-minute brightening of the figure sort of worked a miracle.
