  1. Master
    Exceptionally expressive work
Great use of darks and lights
Charcoal application successfully depicts the etching technique used in the original

    Figure
    Good proportions
Style appears different from master, however greatly resembles Kollwitz’s other works
Beautiful depiction of emotion in both pieces

  2. I thought that your attempt at shading instead of using contour was very well done, but I would have liked to see more tonal variation especially darks. I liked how you used your family in the inspired drawing, it really worked to convey same emotional quality. great.

  3. Excellent translation of values from the original piece. Captured the essence of expressionistic features in your applied study but the values seem to be lacking. Just pushing a few darker values in your drawing will definitely help things read better but it is overall working.

  4. Your master copy is great. The mark making is done very nicely. You were able to see the emotion in your study just as you can in Kollwitz’s work.

  5. Sarah did a good rendering the original work by Kollwitz. This was a piece with two people in mourning. This drawing was very dark and detailed with shades of grays. The piece expresses the somberness of death without showing a dead person. The emotion is carried through her use of strong lines and masterful shading. Sarah’s own work also dealt with the subject matter of death. She drew two subjects that were hugging. Although the subject matter of Sarah’s work stayed with the theme found in the original piece, the mood captured was different and the style was not matched to that of Kollwitz.

  6. Tone-wise, the study lacks the darker colors. However the style of the hands and the piece are all there, making a great match with the masterwork.

  7. I really think that after you did this project, your style changed and you took your drawings in class to the next level! You really embraced the loose marks and rendering into your own figures in class! Great job on both, your Master study could you a bit more contrast but overall, they are both amazing!

  8. From the examples provided it seems like Cathe uses darker backgrounds in an unrefined and unfinished loose hand. This is contrasted with a softer, more detailed facial area; especially note how light the faces are in value compared to the rest of the piece. To me the Study could benefit from adhering closer to this value variation.

  9. The fabric incorporates the mark making of your master’s piece really well, I would like to see the same type of detail in the figures faces.

  10. "Kollwitz I"
The copy is quite accurate, and despite the coldness of the shift to pure greyscale, the values, the lines, and the framing all work to reproduce most of the power of the master work. Her own piece does suggest the common themes of Kollwitz--and even the clothing and hairstyles have been made to hark back to a time at least a bit removed from our own--but tonal range and expressiveness of line is lacking here.
