Students learn basic anatomy and will begin to develop an understanding of the way a figure inhabits space; thus able to successfully reproduce this space in two dimensions. The goal of the course is to learn academic, realistic representation of the figure: Emphasis will be on accurately rendering the figure on the page in proper proportion. Students work up to developing a personal style within the confines of academic figurative art.
Proportions are very nice. I would have liked to see more darks and highlights incorporated in the figure. The use of blue in the background is nice but I would have liked to see the use of green elsewhere then just the couch.
I love the color palette with the muted browns juxtaposed with the blacks, whites, and blues of the background. The hands are beautiful and I yearn for the rest of the figure to have a similar rendering style. The figure overall looks like she's lacking darks to create real dimension.
Details in couch and hand are amazing. I love the use of extreme detail and life in a few areas, while leaving the rest geometric and flat. This makes it have a dream-like quality. I would have liked to see this same detail in the face, this would have given the piece a more emotional (human) quality.
The stylization of your piece is really reminiscent of your self portrait with the stark contour lines. I was reminded of some sort of graffiti or street art when I saw your final painting! The monochromatic color palette for her flesh works with the very few colors you have in your piece. The hands are beautifully done and the little story behind the ‘sperm’ object was hilarious. Really cool piece!
This is another of my favorite paintings in the class. Just to mention, the face needs some more defining marks and shadowing. Also, the hands are a little big. However, the entire piece is beautifully colored, and the background works great with the piece; making it almost dream like in its presentation. Excellent green coloring by the way.
Beautiful lines and composition; where the body is cut off works well for me. This one came so far from where it was, and has the flesh color is soft and beautiful. I like it a lot.
I liked that you abstracted the background instead of painting exactly what was there, it really stood out to me. Your muted figure against the bright green and blue was a successful color choice and I didn't even see the sperm shape until you said something! haha Overall, I think you really pushed your boundaries with this piece and it turned out beautifully!
Hands stand out right away as a very finished element. Creative background works well with diagonally bisected canvas. Id like to see at least on part of the face as detailed as the hands, even if it was just the eyes or just the nose.
You have great proportions and the hand is highly detailed and looks realistic, I just wish the figure wasn't monochromatic, or you had done the entire piece in a monochrome to connect the figure to the space she is in.
The color of the body is a bit off. I would have liked to see more warms highlights in the body. The face needs more shadows and highlights. It feels a little unfinished but overall very nice.
Cool background, and excellent choice of color combination. Your hands rule, good shading, and very nice and accurate use of highlights. I liked the rougher underpainting and I wish more of it had not been covered up, but your brushwork is very nice. Masterful brushwork on the couch.
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sperm? This is also a weird piece. Your reinterpretation of certain found elements is nice. You solved problems and arrived at an effective picture, having strangled out all but a couple of hues--to the great benefit of your overall composition.

ReplyDeleteComposition has an extremely effective emotional quality
ReplyDeleteFigure appears peaceful due to its closed eyes and lack of color
Designs in background are nicely placed and make the composition complete
Muted greens and yellows add a nice pop of color giving the work a more appealing quality
Detail in the hands is rendered exceptionally well
I would have liked to see more shadows on the face

ReplyDeleteThe style is effective. I really enjoy the abstract background! Like the hint of lime green on the couch, The minimal pallet is effect.
