Students learn basic anatomy and will begin to develop an understanding of the way a figure inhabits space; thus able to successfully reproduce this space in two dimensions. The goal of the course is to learn academic, realistic representation of the figure: Emphasis will be on accurately rendering the figure on the page in proper proportion. Students work up to developing a personal style within the confines of academic figurative art.
You did a great job in your copy of the master, it was hard to tell them apart, (and this is hard to achieve). I also felt that your inspired piece captured some of the same qualities, but would have liked a little more contrast to tie it to the other.
Despite the original being done in oil I think you have successfully translated the piece in grayscale as well as using the charcoal effectively to replicate the texture of the oil painting. Your applied study utilizes the high contrast that Haiying uses but with more tonal variation in your lighter values I think would have made the piece more true to his technique. Great composition however!
Your master study is very nicely done. The high contrast is nice. The study is great but not exactly in the same style of Haiying. I do love the absence of your face though to keep that shameful feel.
The choice of artist was very interesting because of its political nature. I liked the lines in both pieces. I could tell Aaron put much effort into this project. There was a very good use of the contrasting white and black. Aaron’s background in black was strong and added strength to the piece. The two works did not look like they were from the same artist. Haiying is dealing with the issue of prostitution while Aaron did a self-portrait. His portrait is too innocent compared to the subject matter of the original artist.
Painterly quality is captured quite well in the Copy. So much attention is paid to the accurate marks of the copy body that what starts to stand out most is the deviation in the background. The diagonal lines converging at the midline could be smoothed out and blended more carefully. But in the Study you moved to a very smooth, almost flattened aesthetic it slips away from the original's intent.
The Master copy is very beautifully done and when I walked into the room and saw it hanging on the wall, I almost mistook it for a photo! Your Master study is also well done, you seemed to have flipped the areas of contrast from the Master copy which is interesting. Nice job!
Your mark making could be a little more stylistic like your master’s original piece, maybe if you had used a similar tool you could get the same painterly effect.
"Dead Ballerina" Also a nice duplication. Though the smidgen of colour did provide a focal point, the monochrome copy functions well enough without it--thanks to the correctness of the forms, the range of value, and the negative space.

I enjoyed your work and my only criticism was that the proportions were a little off and became a bit distracting but overall nice job.
